Our final location in Ireland and the Famine Memorial
Across the way from the monument is Croagh Patrick. Croagh Patrick (also known as "the Reek") is a mountain but also an important site of pilgrimage in County Mayo. Saint Patrick is said to have fasted on the summit for 40 days in the fifth century and built a church on the top. Now, on "Reek Sunday", the last Sunday in July every year, over 15,000 pilgrims climb this mountain. It is not an easy hike for most.
