Mindo is about a two hour bus ride from the Ofelia Terminal in Quito. It is northwest of Quito in the Cloud forest on the western flanks of the Andes. It is world famous for bird watching but is also popular for tubing, zip lining and hiking. The town is surrounded by steep lush green mountains. Because it is in a cloud forest, I didn't see the sun much at all the entire time I was there. Even though I was much lower in elevation than in Quito (5600 ft vs 9350 ft), it still got quite cold at night.
Birds, birds and more birds
I decided to stay outside and high above the town of Mindo at Salchamatia Lodge which was recommended to me by a professional avian photographer. I have never seen so many hummingbirds in one place. Some would fly and land on a branch not too far. Others would dive bomb you. There were so many species of birds and I was only able to capture a few. I would need more of a telephoto lens and more time to do this place any justice in regards to bird photography. Most of mine are grainy but I still had a great time trying to capture a photo of them at the bird feeders.
